about

From the album and project Poppyland Songs; Life On A Cliff Edge.
Nominated for the Norfolk Arts Awards 2022 ‘Poppyland Songs’ is a musical tapestry telling the stories of life on a cliff edge through song inspired by 100 year old journals . With support from Arts Council England, Bertie gathered stories & memories from people past & present in Poppyland, North Norfolk and composed a song cycle.
There is also an accompanying podcast to this album.

The lyrics of this song were written by Frederick Stibbons in the early 1900s. His great nephew gave me his books of poetry. Frederick was a 'ploughman poet' and had a soulful and thoughtful connection to Poppyland. He was a fan of Clement Scott and pushed for there to be a memorial built in his name. This drew the attention of Louie Jermy who Clement met on his first day in Poppyland and who became a good friend. Frederick was also a very proud caddy at Cromer Golf Club.

lyrics

When the skies are weeping,
When the soft rains fall
Where the flower lies sleeping
By the Abbey wall

Wake me from me slumber
Ere the moonbeams glow
Sing that golden number
Love, I long to know

Heigh ho! Merrily oh!
Clear falls the moonlight
O’er blossoms of snow
The Beauties of earth air and sea
Are never so fair
My true love, as thee

When the silv’ry morning
Breaks with rosy light
Night and darkness scorning
Clad in robes of white
As into thy casement,
Soft the breezes blow
Let me hear thee singing,
Singing sweet and low

Chorus

When the skies are weeping,
When the morn is grey
Tho the flowers lie sleeping
Tho their blooms decay
Let me gear thee singing
Songs to okease mine ear
Strains as now are ringing
O’er the moonlight clear
